30 Day Song Challenge, day 1: Cat Stevens - Wild World

70

Piece of cake

What a better way to start the challenge than with my favorite song of all times. And I thought this will be a difficult challenge to follow. Heh, was I wrong or what?

Ok, so, my favorite song of all times is...hmm...I'm into The View at the moment, so maybe it's one of theirs? Nah, they're good, but "all times" - come on man. Gotta give the boys a few more years to climb up that ladder.

Perhaps Sublime? After all, they are my favorite band of all times. True, but how can I select only one song and claim it as my favorite. That won't do. Poor Louie dog would be turning in his grave, devastated and deeply disappointed.

Maybe something more poppy, mainstream? Am I crazy? Don't I know myself enough to anticipate what would happen? Basically, by choosing something mainstream I would induce a feeling of deep self-loathing and self-disgust.

...eerrrr...khm...

Maybe it would be wise for me to start over. Yes, maybe it would.

This s**t is hard! (pardon my French)

Yup ... officially, this has become the worse task of the day. That says a lot, since today is my cleaning day as well.

I know what will help. I'll open youtube and start browsing. It'll come to me that way. Or, even better, what is on my no1 position over at last.fm?

Nah, that won't do.

I swear, mild depressions should be outlawed. Last one caused my last.fm charts to look like a tween girls sleepover fiesta.

How about something that.........................forget it..................thank you mom!

I got it! I really got it!

Who would have thought that my moms obsession with 70s music, while ironing, would lead to me finding my ultimate, favorite, best song of all times.

I remember the first time I heard it. I was still a kid, fascinated with my parent's collection of LPs and accidentally stumbled across a Cat Stevens album. Loved it instantly. My English level was nonexistent at that time, and all I could do, is to judge the song by the music. Wild world was the one which made me imagine everything is possible. It made me spread my arms, pretending they were wings, and fly around the room with my eyes closed, creating new worlds, experiencing new adventures. It made me think I am able to do anything and everything from a simple comfort of my own room. It made me believe that I can do anything I set my mind on doing.

Later, as I started to learn the language and began to understand the lyrics ... nothing changed. My kiddie interpretation still prevailed. And it still does. Even to this day, I can't listen to Wild World without escaping into my own personal heaven.

Is there anything else you can expect from a song? From your favorite song? Didn't think so. If it makes you feel like a kid ... alive, without a care in the world, then yes, it must be your favorite song in the whole wide world.

If my reasoning is correct, and we all agree on it, then, ladies and gentleman, I proudly present my favorite song in the world:

                                               Wild World by Cat Stevens

Cat Stevens - Wild World music video

Wild World

We all know of Cat Stevens, or Yusuf Islam, whichever you prefer. There's no question about it. He really did leave a huge mark on music as we know it, and can be easily, and without a doubt, called one of the fathers of modern rock and roll.

I won't go deeper into his life, music, etc. That's what his Wiki page is here for.

I won't go deeper into the background of this song, 'cause, it too has a dedicated wiki link.

However, can't you tell what is it's meaning, what it is about, just by listening to the lyrics ... the beat? There's heartbreak written in every chord here. Longing, regret, acceptance of ~the end~ and love lost, all mixed into one huge jumble of rock, folk, guitars and raspy voice.

Beautiful!

If you ask me, THIS is the greatest love song ever written.

Stay tuned...

Day 2 song to follow soon (I'm guessing....tomorrow).

Lyrics

Now that I've lost everything to you
You say you wanna start something new
And it's breakin' my heart you're leavin'
Baby, I'm grievin'
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there

[Chorus:]
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl

You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breakin' my heart in two
Because I never wanna see you a sad girl
Don't be a bad girl
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware

[Chorus:]

Baby, I love you
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware

[Chorus:]

Nice pick for Day 1 of the challenge and your favourite. Cat Stevens' Wild World is one of the all time greats and certainly one of his best.

Ah, the 70s. What a great song to pick for this challenge. I love Cat Stevens and all his work. Back in the day I dated a musician who performed much of the work of Cat Stevens along with Harry Chapin and many others. This brings back so many good times! Thanks.
